History

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company, founded in 2001 and located in historic downtown Tucson in 2004, is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit theatre dedicated to enhancing the arts and culture of Tucson while promoting a broader, deeper understanding of the human condition through live performances. Its home is a beautifully-renovated 95-seat storefront theatre in the heart of downtown Tucson where it kicked off its inaugural season in July 2005.

BATC has produced 7 Arizona premieres, 4 southern Arizona premieres and 1 national premiere to great critical acclaim. We were nominated for the Emerging Arts Organization award by the Tucson Pima Arts Council in 2006 and 2007. In 2005 Amy Almquist received an Arizona Daily Star MAC Awards nomination for Criminal Hearts. We received six MAC Awards nominations in 2006. The awards that year for Best Comedy and Best Actress were for our production of Anton Chekhov’s Four Farces and for Lesley Abrams’ performancecrack5 in Frozen. Tucson Weekly also awarded the 2006 Best of Tucson Award for Best Performance by a Thespian to Roberto Guajardo for Underneath the Lintel, a production in our 2005-2006 season.

Dramabiz cover2The national publication, Dramabiz magazine, has chronicled BATC’s start-up story in a cover page article in the November/December 2005 issue. (click the cover photo to see the article). It concludes by saying, “Although still a work in progress, Beowulf Alley’s new home seems to be a comfortable fit and a fine addition to Tucson’s theatre community.”
